Dann Carr, co-creator of the American Gladiators, had been running competitions for Iron Worker picnics in 1983. While running the competitions, Dan had a vision to create a show where where hard working American Athletes
could compete in an bona fide strength competition.
He presented the idea to
Johnny C. Ferraro, and they opened the first competition, open to the public
at Erie Tech High School in Erie, Pa. The first events included arm wrestling,
joust, tug-o-war and other strongman events.
Shortly after that, the concept
went to Hollywood and Samuel Goldwyn Productions/MGM made it the
TV show known as "The American Gladiators".
